What to expect in a blood pressure test…

If you have a blood pressure test coming up, or if you’re thinking of arranging one, here is everything you need to know before you come and visit one of our pharmacies.

STEP 1

A trained healthcare professional will take you to a private consultation room for your blood pressure check. A cuff will be placed on your preferred arm and inflated, briefly tightening to measure blood flow. Most people feel only a slight pressure.

STEP 2

There will be a numerical reading on the electronic device, which we will record for your NHS records and compare to national guidance standards according to your gender and age. If there are any concerns, we will advise you on the next steps.

STEP 3

We are able to offer advice in the management of blood pressure with guidance and in exercise, nutrition and lifestyle. In extreme cases we may refer or suggest you contact your GP for an appointment to discuss the best course of action or treatment.

Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure.

Stay proactive about your heart health with our free blood pressure checks. Early detection of high blood pressure can prevent serious health issues like heart disease and stroke.

Pharmacy First is an NHS service that allows you to get advice and treatment from our pharmacist for minor ailments, without needing to see a GP or visit a hospital. This service aims to make best use of the pharmacist's skills and reduce pressure on other parts of the health service.

Blood Pressure Check

Our pharmacies support the UK’s nationwide initiative to raise awareness of blood pressure monitoring by offering free checks at all branches for anyone over 40 without a prior diagnosis.

Checking your blood pressure is one of the easiest ways to see how well your body is working. Early detection can identify health conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease, as well as help prevent heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia.

Unfortunately, high blood pressure, also referred to in the medical profession as ‘hypertension’, rarely has noticeable symptoms. However, if left untreated, it can significantly increase the risk of serious internal organ issues, including heart attacks and cardiac arrest. That is why it is so important for people to have regular tests, just to check how well blood is circulating round their bodies.
